Stairs!
Staircases, whether inside or outside, are far more than a method of access or egress, or a means of moving fbetween levels. Modern staircases are a statement, and a key part to the design of any luxury home. The transition from one level to another, or from one space to a second has become a journey in most modern homes, and just the sight of a great staricase can be a sculpture in and of itself! Of course, they also have to function well and meet strict building codes along the way.
From spiral to straight, from concrete to steel, stone, and timber, from wrought iron to glass and even brass, we’ve been fortunate over the last three decades to have created some real masterpieces. Below are some of our faves!

Apprentices are the future of our business. All of our current site managers started off their careers as an apprentice, and most of them started their apprenticeships at Horizon! It’s a fact we’re extremely proud of. We are currently looking for apprentices for 2023.
We’re also looking for some highly skilled qualified Carpenters who want to push themselves to the next level, and also a trade-based site manager!

What do you love about your job?
I love the fact that I am learning something new every day I go to work! What are you working on at the moment?
I am at a job in Vaucluse. It’s a large renovation on the harbour, and should be finished in the next few months. Looking forward to seeing it through!
What do you enjoy about working with architects and designers?
I really enjoy seeing the creativity that they bring to the industry

Market Update
We are seeing unprecedented challenges in the industry at the moment. Many of these issues have the net effect of driving prices up, and extending construction programmes out…
LABOUR
Labour shortages are being driven by huge latent demand of work, with not enough qualified people in the country to undertake it. This will take time to overcome, as around the world there are similar stimuli keep foreign workers busy in their own countries, and unlikely to return here anytime soon.
Covid is on the rise again, keeping people at home for a week every time they become infected.
In an industry that relies on human capital, we are working hard to get our full team out on to the field every day, and keep them safe, as always!
MATERIALS
Supply chains worldwide are stretched due to shipping, lack of workers and inefficiencies of factories around the world (in particular China as they try and manage Covid), and prioritising ships and containers to countries other than Australia.
There is still a high demand and low supply of raw materials such as timber, glass and steel that is making it hard to find and expensive to acquire.
Anything imported from overseas is simply taking longer, and costing more to be delivered.
INDUSTRY INSOLVENCIES
Many builders are under financial strain as they try and meet their fixed-price commitments amid rising costs and delays. We have seen the demise of Probuild and many other small and large building firms, with more predicted over the next 6-18 months.
As the property market undergoes a correction, property developers are also struggling to manage with higher costs and lower sales projections.
After many years of record-low interest rates, rates are on the rise, and look to continue to do so for the forseeable future.

LAUNDRY JET – We came across this interesting product recently! It sucks up your dirty clothes from all over the house, and shoots it directly to the laundry, ready to be put into the next wash! No need for laundry baskets anywhere in the house.
Under Construction
Our Special Works team are busy excavating a basement underneath a terrace in Edgecliff, in collaboration with Lynne Bradley Interiors & Stucture Engineers.
Demolition and excavation are well underway at our harbourfront Northbridge Residence II project in collaboration with Design King Company & Partridge Structural.
