Potts Point Apartments

We love the hard stuff. Anyone can do the easy stuff. We’ve seen plenty of hard projects over the years, from building under water, to penthouses in the sky. This is right up there with the hardest of them all!

Our involvement in this project, which commenced in 2020, has been a real challenge that we’ve relished. Safety, structural, fire and waterproofing, materials handling, even storing things on a very tight site – you name it, it’s a challenge. We even have our scaffold cantilevered off the sides of the building envelope.

It began with assessing pre-construction feasibilities and has since evolved into a comprehensive building project, in close collaboration with ou clients, project managers, architects and design team. Our clients, demonstrating visionary thinking, have embarked on an ambitious endeavor to transform two small, run-down top-floor apartments in a renowned building that once accommodated The Beatles. The objective is to convert these amazing spaces into two double-storey penthouses, boasting some of Sydney’s finest views. This transformation is unfolding atop a building situated on one of Sydney’s most bustling streets, elevated 9 stories high.

High-visibility (Hi-Vis) attire is a fundamental aspect of safety, signaling its importance in our day-to-day operations. Ensuring basic safety precautions are in place sets the foundation for tackling more complex safety issues.

Our uncompromising objective is to guarantee that everyone who enters our construction sites leave the same way they came. Ten fingers and toes, two eyes, ears and lungs.

It’s an essential reminder, especially to our apprentices, that they should prioritize their safety as they may require their physical wellness for another 80 years or more!

While high-visibility clothing may not resemble the latest fashion trends in Milan and New York City, its function surpasses any aesthetics. It enhances visibility, providing others more time to prevent accidents – a crucial factor in the often dangerous environment of a construction site.

Moreover, it symbolizes our commitment across the entire company and all our stakeholders to fostering a safety-oriented culture. Visitors and workers alike perceive this commitment, understanding that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

This month we meet Coby Sher, one of our second-year apprentices, and our current “Apprentice of the Year” from 2023.

How long have you been at Horizon?

Full time since the start of 2023.

What do you love about your job?

Being outside and working with a good bunch of people.

What are you working on at the moment?

Our renovation project in Northbridge. It’s a fantastic job on the waterfront, on a really steep block. Lots of walking and climbing every day!

What do you enjoy about working with architects and designers?

Seeing how and why they do certain things on jobs.

Where were you born?

Sydney.

What has been your greatest professional achievement to date?

Learning new things everyday.

 

What’s the most useful thing you’ve learned throughout your career?

How to read and interpret plans.

 

Three people you’d have over for a BBQ?

David Attenborough, Ken block and Steve Irwin.

Favourite dessert?

Pavlova!

 

What do you do outside of work?

Mountain biking, driving and walking the dogs!

2023 Horizon Golf Championship a huge success

As you know, we love a challenge! So we added another charity partner, and doubled last year’s goal of $15,000. 104 players on the day, and some amazing sponsors (below) helped us reach our goal, and exceed it!

Over $34,000 raised on the day! Thanks to everyone involved.

We’re already looking forward to the 2024 event!

Mates in Construction – Suicide Prevention

For many years we have supported Mates in Construction, an organisation geared to support construction workers, and raise awareness and funds in the name of Suicide Prevention. In conjuction with RUOK? Day, we held toolbox meetings on all our sites, and discussed ways we can improve the mental health and wellbeing of our colleagues.

Some scary facts:

– Construction workers are 8x more likely to die from suicide, than from an accident at work.

– The Australian construction industry loses a worker every second day to suicide.

New rules for Estimated Development Cost Reports

From Monday, 4th March 2024, the NSW Department of Planning recommends that councils require applications with an estimated development cost (EDC) over $3 million to be accompanied by an EDC report. An appropriately qualified quantity surveyor who is a member of a relevant professional body, such as AIQS or RICS, must prepare these reports.

As many of you will know, our Managing Director, David Moses, is a licenced builder and also a registered QS, and we can quickly and professionally prepare these reports for your upcoming council application.

Business Excellence Awards

We were honoured to have been nominated FINALISTS in the 2023 Master Builders Australia National Business Excellence Awards. Whilst we didn’t win, we think that being considered in the top three large residential businesses in Australia is not too shabby!

We are so proud of our team, our subbies and suppliers, and so grateful to our clients and design collaborators that we work with day in, day out.

The Horizon Advisory team is actively engaged in an upcoming project located in Wilton, within Sydney’s South West region. The primary objective is to meticulously restore the property to its original grandeur. Once completed, this project will significantly contribute to the Bingara Gorge community, offering a restored property for future generations to appreciate.

Under Construction

Our Northbridge renovation is coming to a close in the next few months, and it is so exciting to see all of our hard work come together in this extraordinary home. We have thoroughly enjoyed working in close collaboration with Architects Design King Company, and engineers Partidge, and look forward to handing this one over to our supportive clients in the middle of the year.
