This extensive renovation, designed by DKC Architecture, including major alterations to the landscaped areas around the enormous back yard, transformed a dated waterfront property into a vibrant family sanctuary. Horizon worked closely with DKC, as well as Partridge Engineers to deliver this beautiful home to the exacting standards we have become renowned for over our 45 years in business.To cap off an already fantastic night, we were honoured to be named the MBA NSW Master Builder of the Year for the second time, an unprecedented achievement. This award reflects the incredibly talented and dedicated people we have on our team, the high quality systems & processes we have developed over decades delivering the most complicated and complex projects in Sydney, a high-performance culture of curiosity, drive, collaboration and going the extra mile, and relationships with our partners that have endured for many decades.
The judges saw the multitude of challenges that were identified and overcome throughout the course of the project – including materials handling at the end of a dead-end street. This involved getting materials in and out over a 2,500m2 block, with over 50m of level change, and several hundred metres in length. A national park on one side, two luxury homes on the other, and Sydney’s middle harbour at the bottom. An opening was cut early in to the existing tennis court, and materials were transported into and out of the site via a road built in order to freely access the rear of the property. Complex piering was required to retain the back yard and neighbour, in order to build the boathouse. Supplemental materials were also imported and taken away by barge, when the tide allowed.
Gabian retaining walls allowed us to transform the once unusable bushland behind the house into a system of terraces where our clients can now enjoy the vistas of the harbour in peace and tranquillity. Once they’ve found their inner peace, they can then climb the new outdoor staircase back up to the infinity pool built over the new concrete-encased sewer line.
Once access from the street was no longer required to the rear, and the pool structure was complete, the fitout of the house could get properly underway. New balconies were installed, and the house detailed in copper. All windows were replaced with fire-rated steel windows to comply with the Flame Zone rating, being so close to the National Park.
All this and much more, was completed during one of the wettest years on record!
And of course, all was done to our uncompromising safety standards. Everyone MUST go home the same way they arrive, EVERY TIME.
